General maintenance of masonry involves removing the deteriorated mortar with hand tools or by saw cutting the existing mortar joints to get to a sound surface. All dust and debris is
washed away. Masonry can be chemically cleaned and power washed with water.
Mortar joints are neatly re-pointed with a compatible style of mortar. Various colors, techniques and finishes are used depending on
the owners or aesthetic requirements.
Before
All mortar joints are carefully sawcut out with hand grinders. Care is given to only remove the mortar and not damage the brick. Grinding depth will vary depending on
specifications level of resoration desired. After dust is washed off, the mortar joints are re-pointed.
Mortars are mixed to match the type of masonry based on ASTM specifications. Historical and contemporary
mortars will vary. This after photo is flush style joint with a Type N mortar.
After
The appearance of a building can be changed and enhanced by the mortar color. Samples can be placed on the work areas before projects are started for review.
